Latest on Super Visa Insurance

On Nov 4, the Government of Canada announced that it is taking action to cut the backlog of sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents. With more than 165,000 parents and grandparents having applied to become permanent residents of Canada, processing times exceed seven years. To alleviate this situation, the Canadian government is introducing the new “Parent and Grandparent Super Visa,” which will be valid for up to 10 years.

The new Super Visa, which will come into effect on December 1, 2011, will be a multiple-entry visa which allows the visa holder to remain in Canada for up to two years at a time without the need to renewal their visa. The government has stated that applicants will be required to obtain private Canadian health-care insurance for their stay in Canada.

This will protect the child’s ability to obtain insurance against future health problems, such as asthma or cancer; it will also protect the child against risky occupations such as becoming a firefighter or pilot.
